An event dedicated to the Khojaly genocide was held at the Institute of Physics PLE

[26.02.2026]

On 26.02.2026, an event was held at the Institute of Physics PLE on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly massacre. The event opened with the playing of the anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the dear memory of our compatriots who were martyred during the Khojaly and Karabakh conflicts was commemorated with a minute of silence.

Opening the event with an introductory speech, Professor E. Huseynov, Acting Director of the Institute, said that 34 years ago Armenian military units, with the support of the 366th Russian Motorized Rifle Regiment, attacked the city of Khojaly, where 2,500 people lived, committed unprecedented atrocities against the civilian population, and carried out one of the bloodiest genocides in human history.

He noted that in 1994, at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Heydar Aliyev, a special resolution was adopted in the Milli Majlis on “February 26 – Khojaly Genocide Day,” and that this document extensively reflected the causes, essence, and perpetrators of this tragedy.

At the same time, Professor E. Huseynov emphasized that the testimonies of living witnesses of the Khojaly genocide, as well as facts confirmed by video materials, clearly prove that what the Armenian executioners committed was one of the most terrible crimes against humanity. Nevertheless, he noted with regret that some countries of the world still remain silent in the face of these facts and avoid giving the necessary legal and political assessment of this terrible genocide.

Then the floor was given to Prof. Huseyn Ibrahimov. The speaker spoke about the victims of that terrible night, the revenge of the Khojaly martyrs during the 44-day Patriotic War, and the liberation of Khojaly after the anti-terrorist operation.

In the end, Associate Professor Ravan Mehdiyeva gave statistical information on the Khojaly genocide and spoke about the state and national care shown to children who lost their parents during the genocide, the “Mother's Cry” monument erected in memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide, and the systematic and consistent activities of Leyla Aliyeva, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, to convey the facts about the genocide to the world community through the “Justice for Khojaly” campaign.

She emphasized that Khojaly has now been revived, that 144 families have settled there, and that it has become one of the paradise corners of Karabakh.

At the end of the event, a video dedicated to Khojaly was shown, and the Institute’s young scientists and researchers visited the “Mother's Cry” monument.
